Old Fuse Boxes

Older fuse box contacts are made up of 2 contactor blades, connected together by use of a piece of fuse wire, which melts and needs replacing every time there is a short circuit. Often these old wired fuses are found in electrical installations and are not capable of supporting the demands of modern equipment and have the potential to be slow to blow – increasing the possibility of a fire. These old Fuse-boxes are due for an upgrade now.

Each time equipment is added to the load on a circuit, or extra lights or sockets are installed, additional load is placed on the fuse. This can increase the chances of fuse failure and the need to replace fuse-wire – often in the dark.

If you have a fuse box, like the one pictured on the right, you could benefit from an upgrade to a new modern consumer unit (fuse box) with circuit breakers instead of fuses and an RCD trip to disconnect the supply in the case of a fault.

If you are considering an extension to your home or additional lights and sockets, you should review the capacity of your existing fuse box to ensure it is not overloaded with the extra usage.

If MCC Electrical Services (NE) Ltd is invited to quote for such installations, as part of the visit we can quickly identify the capability of your Fusebox / Consumer Unit to accommodate the additional load.

Main Benefits of a Modern Fuse-Box (Consumer Unit)

A new modern Consumer Unit greatly reduces the risk of fire in the home, due to its ability to detect wiring faults and disconnect the electricity before any heat builds up.

RCD’s: Modern fuse-boxes incorporate RCD’s (Residual Current Devices), a safety device designed to protect against personal electric shock. These trip when a circuit overloads, protecting the wiring from burning out and your family from nasty electrical shocks.

Circuit Breakers: In the event of an electrical wiring fault the circuit breakers will trip whereas in the old type of fusebox there is the potential that the electricity supply would stay connected until a fire occurs. The built in circuit breakers will trip within 40 micro-seconds if you accidentally touch any live cables. This is likely to save the life of the person touching them.

NICEIC Certified for your protection.

Fuseboxes can be installed with a number of options, for example…

  • Dedicated Lighting Circuits
  • Dedicated Socket Circuits
  • Shower Circuit
  • Dedicated garage Circuit
  • Any additional circuit for your specific needs

Replacing the Fuse-box with a modern Consumer Unit is a task that involves minimal disruption to the home. The new boxes are easier to use. No fiddling around changing fuses – just push a button, or flick a switch.
